Nichole Barber

Nichole attended college at University of Central Missouri. She spent eight years in retail prior to joining Veterans United, where she has over a decade of experience as a Senior Loan Officer. She is very passionate about helping others and using her skills to help their dreams come true. She is also very passionate about family. Nichole loves to read, watch her favorite sports teams (Iowa Hawkeyes, STL Cardinals, and Dallas Cowboys), when she's not moonlighting as a taxi driver for her kids (they pay in hugs!). You can find her on any given evening or weekend at the ballfield watching her kids, her favorite athletes in the whole world! Nichole also enjoys weightlifting and picked up running in her 40's (ahem-- mid life crisis). In 2025, she completed her first 10k, Half Marathon, Full Marathon (Marine Corp Marathon) and Ultra Marathon!

We were afraid to get a veterans home loan because of everything we heard. We are very happy we decided to find out for ourselves. They do make the process as painless as possible, there are not as many restrictions as we thought, they just want to make sure your home is safe for you and your family. We feel extremely lucky to have found them, with their help our 13 year dream is finally coming true. Veterans United went above and beyond for us in securing our 1st Home. We are so happy to move from Maine to this beautiful house in Southern Virginia. Veterans United made our dream a reality.

No, I would not recommend Veteran’s United. As a 30 year retired senior officer, I elected what I thought was an easy option. What I got was a complex, error-filled process that incurred numerous delays. Having borrowed just $122,000 for a 110 year old desert home appraised at just $153k, this home buying experience should have been easy. I opted for a conventional loan rather than a VA as I didn’t need the 100% option. Having been through 8 prior real estate transactions, this one takes the cake… excessive delays, missed closing dates on the part of the lender, excessive closing costs ($7,800) even though I chose a conventional loan to avoid up charges associated with VA loans, poor communication and not just with me but with the selected title company. I won’t be using VU again and I urge others to really take a hard look before they select them for their mortgage needs. Oh yeah, you local FCU will come through with a better APR assuming you have decent credit.

Response from Veterans United

Hi David,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I'm sorry to hear that your experience fell so far short of your expectations, especially given your previous homebuying experience and military service. We understand how frustrating it can be when a transaction that seems straightforward becomes more complicated than anticipated.

It’s disappointing to hear that delays, communication issues, and closing costs left you feeling unsupported throughout the process. Our goal is to provide clear guidance and consistent communication with both our borrowers and our closing partners, and I'm sorry that wasn't your experience.

We appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention, as feedback like yours helps us identify opportunities to improve. If you'd be willing to discuss your experience further, we'd encourage you to reconnect with our Client Advocate team at 1-800-212-5200 or ClientAdvocate@vu.com. We'd welcome the opportunity to review your concerns with you.

Sincerely,
Claire S., Client Relations Manager

Veterans United's Nichole Barber and Jesse Hamilton provided our family with top notch service and professionalism throughout our entire home loan process. We could not have asked for anything better!
