After reading many of the reviews I have seen on this site, I feel that some up-front honesty would help. I will leave this review chronologically to hopefully assist with anyone in the same boat.I am a first-time home buyer.
I did NOT work with a realtor.
My wife knew the sellers before contract.
I asked for clarity and consistent communication up front.I started the process on 09FEB with a preapproval and closed on the house 24MAR.
All in all, I would say that the process went at a fair pace, considering I did not have a realtor to coach me through anything. Within the first 10 days or so, I was in the underwriting portion and things were moving at a rapid rate. All questions I had were answered quickly and thoroughly via phone call or email. I knew up front that the documents requested during the underwriting process were going to seem odd, so I did my best to complete all requests within the same day.The first frustration I received with VU was with the appraisal order. It was something that had to be paid for up-front, and I was warned that there was a 2 week delay before an appraiser could make it out. I called the VU payment department to ask how I could pay for this and the CSR was quick to help. He scheduled a ticket for the cost and I paid it, asking him to go ahead and schedule the appraisal. He said that he would take care of it, and I moved on. Roughly 5-7 days later, I asked my loan specialist about the appraisal date so I could inform the sellers. He asked if I would like to schedule an appraisal because one had not been requested. Another 5-7 days later, I was speaking with the loan coordinator and asked the same question. Her response was the same - "would you like me to go ahead and schedule the appraisal?"At this point, any email I sent with a question would be partially answered, or not answered at all, and almost always had a 2-3 day delay. In the grand scheme of things, I still closed quicker than expected, but I want to be open with my frustrations so that anyone in the same situation understands that there is still likely going to be a positive outcome. My second frustration was with the home insurance policy. When the policy was built, it was projected to start on the 09MAR. I had asked in the beginning of March if this could be pushed to the right in the event I did not close by 09MAR. I was assured that this is totally doable. 08MAR, knowing I wasn't closing on the 9th, asked for this to be pushed to the right. I received no response. Eventually, my loan specialist reached out once underwriting was complete. I asked a third time about the home insurance policy because I had received an email stating that my insurance payment would be due in one week. I hadn't closed yet, and didn't have a close date set, so I was a bit frustrated by it all. He assured me that the policy would be pushed to the right and not to worry. To wrap this review up, I am mostly satisfied with the homebuying process I received with VU. Homebuying is not a fun process for anyone, I hear. My only real complaints were the lack of consistent clarity and communication. But would I recommend VU to someone I care about? Yes. Definitely yes. Watch the helpful videos the site has to offer. Ask as many questions as you like and keep asking until you get an answer. Homebuying is stressful, and a company such as VU should understand your stress and be there to answer all the questions you have.
Veterans United puts the oo in smooth.
The only thing I think that could’ve made the process for them and me easier is asking each individual best means of contact. I know they wasted a lot of time trying to call me over things I just ended up doing over email or on the website. Otherwise, they did great. Got several gifts from them (engraved cutting board was my favorite). Very very kind people.
Veterans United creates a painless and professional home buying experience for veteran homebuyer. I would recommend them to any veteran looking to buy their first home.
