Veterans United Employee Jared Wilmes

Jared Wilmes

I feel blessed to work at Veterans United where they are dedicated to delivering results to our veterans with integrity. I am excited for the opportunity to work with veterans on daily basis and am committed to making a difference for those that I have the opportunity to proudly serve through Veterans United. I graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics. Before coming to Veterans United Home Loans, I spent five years at MFA Oil Company, a farmer cooperative, directing their Biomass Division. Prior to MFA Oil, I spent 10 years as the Head Cross Country Coach at the University of Missouri. I enjoy spending free time with my family, getting outdoors, or coaching one of my kids' sports.

While I successfully secured a reliable home, the process was marred by blemishes of impairment that evolved the critical communication challenges between the agents involved. I assumed and trusted that those that were a part of my first-time home buying team were working cohesively together towards my goal. However, I often signed important documents at the last minute—essential forms to ensure a smooth closing process. It falls on me as I reflect and realize now how I could have been more diligent in reviewing the documents before signing. My trust in the professionals led me to believe that they were managing everything in my best interest, but my emotions got away from me as I believed in good business and good dealings with good people. Unfortunately, on closing day, I was surprised to learn about a substantial amount of additional funds required on top of the thousands I had already invested. This unexpected development was daunting, and coming up with the funds became essential to secure my home the day of.Despite this experience's challenge, I can still acknowledge the successful outcome. It hurts but I can still acknowledge it. I question the practicality of a VA loan when done correctly, which typically offers a potential 0% down payment or a smaller down payment than I had to come up with in less than 24 hours. Had I been more informed, I might have explored other loan options that could have better fit my financial expectations when dealing with additional costs in the thousands. This falls on my lack of understanding of the required dealings.I genuinely wanted to embrace my new home on the day I closed on it, but instead of feeling joy on closing day, I reflected on the experience's complexities. Rather than celebrating, I sat in the empty room, contemplating the decisions that led to my mixed emotions. My VA disability with mental health challenges can be extremely challenging at times, making it difficult to grasp the sense of accomplishment thoroughly that I thought I would feel on closing day. However, I recognize the importance of the escrow processes and self-funding credits to combat veteran homelessness. I believe more should have been said and done in the interest of my needs, but it is clear that there is a strong desire to support veterans.I hope to channel my experiences into more constructive reflections because now, I'm still filled with mixed emotions about the whole ordeal. This experience was different and a bit unsettling. It has provided me with valuable insights and has taught me some critical, hard life lessons about whom I'm doing business with.I will apply this to future endeavors, ensuring I am better informed and prepared for the next steps when making large life-changing purchases, especially homeownership. I remain optimistic about creating a fulfilling and welcoming space in my new home, and I hope to shift my focus toward making it a place filled with joy and purpose for myself and my family. However, the dark cloud looms and remains over my feelings towards my new residence.

I am soooo happy I decided to work with this team and they decided to work with me! They made this process extremely simple, they always communicated, they were knowledgeable, got things done and overall pleasant to work with and speak to!! Jared, Aaron and Brayden are a great team, I would recommend VU to anyone but especially this team. I am so happy with the home I bought and I couldn’t have done it without them! I am hoping I am in my home for a long time but if I were to ever buy again I really would want to work with this team.
